Incontro con Lorenzo Mason
e Marco Campardo (Tankboys)
Dietro il nome Tankboys (dal 2005) ci sono Lorenzo Mason e Marco Campardo, due graphic designer che hanno iniziato a collaborare durante il periodo degli studi all’Università Iuav di Venezia. Il loro sodalizio si traduce in progetti che spaziano dalla curatela e dall’allestimento di mostre all’editoria, passando per workshop e conferenze. Tutte iniziative intraprese con il proposito di essere, prima di tutto, attivi operatori culturali all’interno del contesto sociale in cui vivono.
Coerentemente con questa visione, nel 2008 i Tankboys hanno fondato con altri soci XYZ, “uno spazio espositivo plurale” nel cuore di Treviso che organizza e ospita mostre, eventi, proiezioni e performance, offrendo un punto di incontro e scambio per quanti sono interessati alle diverse forme di espressione delle arti applicate.
In effetti “creare movimento” sembra essere un obiettivo caratterizzante per i Tankboys, che fanno dei loro progetti occasioni per coinvolgere altri designer, artisti o professionisti, e spesso per farne emergere le storie. Ne è un esempio l’attività editoriale con Automatic Books, piccola casa editrice indipendente da loro fondata nel 2009 con l’illustratrice Elena Xausa, che si propone di presentare e raccontare il lavoro di designer e artisti.
Abbiamo intervistato i Tankboys durante l’incontro del 29 giugno scorso al Triennale Design Museum e pubblichiamo qui la risposta alla prima domanda. L’intervista integrale sarà presentata in mostra.

Founded in 2005, Tankboys hides the names of Marco Campardo and Lorenzo Mason, two graphic designers who have started collaborating since they were students at the University Iuav of Venice. Their partnership reflects in projects ranging from curating and organizing exhibitions to publishing, from leading workshops and lectures: all initiatives they engage in with the aim of being, above all, active cultural operators within the social context they live in.
Consistent with this view is the XYZ gallery project, which they co-founded in 2008 in Treviso. XYZ is a “multiple exhibition space” that organizes and hosts exhibitions, events, and performances, in order to offer a space for meeting and exchange between those who are interested in the various forms of expression of the applied arts.
In fact, to start things moving seems to be one main objective of Tankboys, who initiate their projects as opportunities to engage, and to collaborate with, other designers, artists and professionals – often bringing into light their stories. One good example is Automatic Books, a small independent publishing house they co-founded in 2009 with the illustrator Elena Xausa, and which aims to feature and narrate the work of designers and artists.
